How to stick to a budget during the holidays

Learn how to stick to a holiday budget with mindful spending, strategic shopping, and smart financial planning for a stress-free season.

The holiday season is here, and with it comes the inevitable pressure to spend. From Christmas shopping to home goods and decorations, consumer spending tends to spike during the holidays. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend an average of $902 per person on holiday-related purchases this year (NRF). With so many temptations and advertisements pushing us to splurge, how can you stick to a budget while still enjoying the season?

Here’s how I’ve learned to navigate holiday spending without going overboard:

  1. Establish a comprehensive holiday budget. The first step is setting clear spending limits. As I write this on December 1, I’ve already completed all of my Christmas shopping. I knew in advance how much I wanted to spend on each person, and I made sure to stick to those amounts. By setting a hard limit before the season started, I avoided impulse purchases and didn’t let the pressure of the season cause me to overspend.
  2. Prioritize meaningful gifts. Rather than buying extravagant items just for the sake of it, I focus on finding meaningful gifts that align with my loved ones’ needs or interests. I have a running list of gift ideas that I update throughout the year as my loved ones mention their wants and needs, so I always have ideas. This way, instead of getting random, possibly unwanted, items, I carefully chose a few well-thought-out gifts for each person on my list. This approach not only keeps me within budget but also makes gift-giving more personal and impactful.
  3. Leverage sales and discounts. I’ll admit it – I’ve been tempted by the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales this past week, but I’ve learned to be strategic. For holiday shopping, I was able to snag a few items from my running ideas list at significant discounts, and I’ve been making sure that these sales align with the budget I already set. Knowing exactly what I’m looking to get and how much I want to spend helps me stick to my financial goals without getting swept up in the discounts.
  4. Implement cash-only purchases. When it comes to sticking to a budget, using cash can really help curb spending. By only spending the cash you’ve allocated for gifts, decorations, and other holiday expenses, you can avoid racking up credit card debt that would leave me stressed come January. This method can help avoid impulse buys.
  5. Avoid high-interest financing options. While “buy now, pay later” offers seem tempting, I have never selected this option at checkout and never plan to. It can be so easy to fall into the trap of spreading payments out over several months, but I know that high-interest rates or missed payments could quickly ruin my budget. Instead, I prefer to save up and stick to my cash or credit card payments.

By sticking to a well-planned budget, I can enjoy the holidays without guilt or financial stress. I’ve learned that by setting limits early, prioritizing meaningful gifts, and being strategic with sales, I can stay within my budget and still make the season special. With just a little planning, it’s possible to have a fun and festive holiday without the anxiety of overspending.

The best part? I’ve even left a few things on my loved ones’ wish lists that I didn’t get this year, which gives me ideas for their birthdays or even Christmas next year! By embracing a thoughtful approach to holiday spending, you can ensure that the season remains joyful and stress-free!
